DF 65 Series 3 Race 8 Monday 28 Sep

A healthy fleet of 15 boats turned up for racing today despite the grey skies and lack of significant wind in the forecast. As the morning went on the weather improved as the clouds broke and the sun emerged but this wasn’t accompanied by any real improvement in wind strength or stability, that didn’t happen until just after we had finished racing for the day!
Racing started in a broadly Northerly zephyr so we all moved to the south side of the lake which enabled an into wind start and a second short beat on the course. After 5 races and coffee break we moved back to the normal North side of the lake as it was deemed the whispers of wind appeared to be coming from a more easterly direction and completed the last four races.
As expected in light and changing conditions there were a spread of winners, Ian Parker (819), Andy Dore (358), Adrian Wallis (81) and Jamie Wilson (752) all won a race. Jamie would have won two races but in a cruel twist on the last leg of the last race, went from first to fifth thanks to a large hole in the draught. The remaining 5 races were won by Andy Smith (37) who was the best at making sense of the challenging conditions. Although the results will be published separately there is a fairly safe bet that Andy won the day over all – well done. Commiserations to Neil Baxter (62) who’s boat went in to whirling dervish mode when the receiver packed up thus cutting his day short.
Overall a challenging but enjoyable morning of racing in some fantastic September sun with Andy Smith beginning to consolidate his position at the top of the series results.
Next DF65 racing is next Monday 5 Oct followed by Saturday 10 Oct on the North lake.
