Saturday October 15th

Vane 36 club racing

Today there was a drizzly, cold forecast for the club series racing, but by the first start, layers were being shed and it was almost shirt-sleeve weather by lunchtime.  Sadly the breeze oscillated between the south and south-west all day, and despite being a top-suit breeze it was not straightforward to settle on the right vane setting.

Four boats raced, including for the first time the club 36.  In the initial boards, Jacque and Eric took five points as did Peter and Paul.  As the day wore on Peter and Paul got to grips with the shifty conditions, losing only one beat in the whole event.  Racing was close, and most boats managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on occasion.  After a solid three hours racing, Peter and Paul had won with 12 points, followed by Mervyn with 8.  Jacque and Eric were a very close third with 7, followed by Lo-Ki, sailed by the mates, with 3.

Next Friday, the 21st October, is the Mick Thomas Trophy, the only vane racing event where all the competitors begin together and the winner is the skipper finishing in the middle of the fleet.  We are expecting a good turnout of 36’s, so why not come and see the fun?
